All you need to know for Simrishamn 2018 (updated 12 June)

The Gold Cup and the Swedish Championship in Simrishamn are approaching. Here’s everything you need to know if you haven’t registered yet. For more info and registration, see https://www.sailosterlen.se. Current list of participants can be found here.

The venue

Simrishamn is a town on the eastern coast of Skåne, Sweden with 7’000 inhabitants. The town’s position on the easternmost part of the Skåne makes it possible to have the course area just outside the harbour. Simrishamn usually offers western winds of about 10 knots in July.

Simrishamn can be reached from Malmö (90 min), Trelleborg (90 min) and Ystad (45 min) with road E65 and 9 and 11 and trains from Malmö, Ystad or Trelleborg (via Malmö). Trelleborg has ferry connections with Rostock and Travemünde, while Ystad has connection with Swinoujscie in western Poland.

The yacht club

Organiser of the 2018 Gold Cup and Swedish Championship is Simrishamns Segelsällskap with a long Folkboat tradition and several Swedish champions.

1982 winner Knud Andreasen (centre)

Simrishamns Segelsällskap and Simrishamn hosted the 1982 Gold Cup where Knud Andreasen, Henrik Kold, and Eddy Unglaub defended the cup for Kerteminde Sejlklub.

More recently, Simrishamns Segelsällskap organises Bornholm runt and Hanöregattan yearly.

The regatta

The Gold Cup racing will be held according to the Gold Cup statutes, while the Swedish championship will have shorter races.

Last entry for both events are 20 July 2018.

Entries include mooring fees, breakfast with opportunity for lunch, opening ceremony buffet and regatta dinner.

After-regatta events

The organiser will host daily after sail in the harbour tent.

With both the Swedish Championship and the Gold Cup, there will be two regatta dinners, on Saturday 7 July and Friday 13 July.

Another (less important) sports event during the summer of 2018 is the FIFA World Cup and Simrishamn will screen matches from the quarter-finals and semi-finals in the after-sail tent.
